Biography

Juno Dawson was born in West Yorkshire. As a child, she honed her writing skills by creating her own Doctor Who stories. Dawson attended by Bangor University, after which she became a primary school teacher. In her spare time, she began writing novels for young adults, the first of which was 2012's Hollow Pike, published by Orion Children's Books. Dawson soon branched out into non-fiction, such as This Book Is Gay (2014), and her books soon grew so popular that she was able to leave her career in education to become a full-time writer. In 2015, she came out as a transgender woman. Dawson's oeuvre expanded to include publications aimed at the adult market, including the self-reflective The Gender Games and the Her Majesty's Royal Coven series. She also took occasional acting roles, earning credits on the likes of I May Destroy You and Holby City.

Dawson's first professional connection with Doctor Who came when she was invited to contribute to the second season of the spin-off series Class... only for the programme to be cancelled after its initial run in 2016. The following year, however, she began contributing to a different Doctor Who spin-off with The Dollhouse, an installment of the Torchwood series of audio dramas from Big Finish Productions. Then, in 2018, BBC Books published Dawson's Thirteenth Doctor novel The Good Doctor. She soon renewed her connection with the Thirteenth Doctor when she was commissioned to oversee the dramatic podcast Doctor Who: Redacted, which debuted in 2022. In between, Dawson's first television script was an episode of Sparks. Her childhood aspirations will finally be realised in 2025, when she writes a Doctor Who story for Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.
