Adam Smith
Episodes Broadcast: 2010
As a teenager, Adam Smith co-founded Vegetable Vision, an organisation
which brought artistically-oriented youth together to collaborate and
compete. One of the projects which emerged from Vegetable Vision saw
Smith creating visuals for nightclubs and raves. In 1994, this work
brought him into contact with electronic music pioneers the Chemical
Brothers, and Smith was soon providing the graphic direction of their
live shows. He began directing their music videos in 2004, and his
clientele soon expanded to include other acts such as the Streets.
Having attracted the notice of the television industry, Smith was
recruited to direct four installments of Skins in 2007. The next
year, he made six episodes of Little Dorrit.
At the same time, incoming Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat
was seeking dynamic new directors for Matt Smith's first season as the
Eleventh Doctor in 2010. Smith fit the bill perfectly; he handled the
first story into production, The
Time Of Angels / Flesh And Stone, and then the season
premiere, The Eleventh Hour.
In 2013, he and his long-time partner, furniture designer Martha Freud,
welcomed a daughter called Nancy. Smith made his movie debut in 2016
with the crime drama Trespass Against Us starring Michael
Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson. In 2019, he returned to television to
direct the first two episodes of World On Fire.
