Alice Troughton

Episodes Broadcast: 2006-2009

Biography

Having worked in a variety of junior production positions during the Nineties, Alice Troughton began directing soon after the turn of the century. Her first experiences came on Doctors, for which she would eventually make two dozen episodes. She also wrote and a directed a 2004 short film called Doris The Builder. Other early television credits included Holby City, EastEnders and No Angels. Troughton was soon recruited for not one but two Doctor Who spin-offs. First, she handled a pair of episodes for the debut season of Torchwood in 2006. The following year, she was responsible for two serials during the inaugural season of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Troughton was then invited to work on the parent show, directing the 2008 episodes The Doctor's Daughter and Midnight, which featured David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. Three more stories for The Sarah Jane Adventures followed in 2009, the last of which was The Gift. She also pitched in, uncredited, on the first Doctor Who adventure to go into production with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. This was The Time Of Angels / Flesh And Stone, which saw Troughton briefly take charge of a second unit while Adam Smith directed the main shoot. Away from the worlds of Doctor Who, she earned credits on Casualty and Merlin.

Troughton maintained a busy schedule during the 2010s, finding work on both sides of the Atlantic. She directed for Atlantis, Legends Of Tomorrow, A Discovery Of Witches and Tin Star, and was reunited with former Doctor Who executive producer Russell T Davies on his drama Cucumber. In the Twenties, Troughton was both a director and an executive producer on The Midwich Cuckoos.
