Anjli Mohindra
Born: 20th February 1990
Episodes Broadcast: 2008-2011, 2020
Anjli Mohindra was born in Edgware, London. Although much of her
upbringing took place in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, she spent four
years on a German military base, where her father had a clerical
posting. Having become interested in acting, Mohindra attended the
Central Junior Television Workshop in Nottingham. She made her
professional debut in a 2005 episode of Coronation Street.
Installments of Doctors and The Inbetweeners soon
followed, before Mohindra was cast in a regular role for the 2008 season
of the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Introduced in The Day Of The
Clown, she portrayed aspiring reporter Rani Chandra through to
the programme's premature end in 2011, following the death of star
Elisabeth Sladen. In the meantime, Mohindra also made appearances in
shows like Law & Order: UK, Holby City and Beaver
Falls.
Mohindra maintained her involvement with the worlds of Doctor Who
via multiple roles in audio dramas from Big Finish Productions, starting
with the 2012 Bernice Summerfield release Brand
Management. She continue to make regular appearances on television,
amassing credits on programmes such as The Missing,
Paranoid, and Cucumber from The Sarah Jane
Adventures showrunner Russell T Davies. Mohindra's movie debut came
in 2015's Miss You Already starring Drew Barrymore and Toni
Collette. In 2017, she could be seen in the telefilm The Boy With The
Topknot; one of her co-stars was Sacha Dhawan, who would later play
the Master in Doctor Who, and the two began a long-term
relationship. Mohindra's work during the latter part of the decade
spanned both sides of the Atlantic, including Bodyguard, Dark
Heart and Wild Bill in the United Kingdom, as well as the
American superhero show Legends Of Tomorrow.
In 2020, Mohindra finally had the opportunity to appear in Doctor
Who itself -- albeit beneath heavy prosthetics which rendered her
virtually unrecognisable -- when she played the Queen Skithra opposite
Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor in Nikola Tesla's Night Of Terror.
The same year, she provided the voice of the Mechonoid Queen in the
animated spin-off Daleks!. Amongst Mohindra's television projects
during the Twenties were Vigil, The Lazarus Project and
The Suspect. In 2022, she reprised Rani Chandra for both the BBC
Sounds podcast Doctor Who: Redacted and the Big Finish audio play
The Turn Of The Tides. Chandra again returned to Rani the
following year, as Big Finish launched a new audio range under the
banner Rani Takes On The World.
