Biography

Brian Dooley was born in Liverpool, Merseyside and attended Cambridge University. He aspired to write for television, but spent a decade working odd jobs while shopping scripts. Dooley finally broke into the industry around the turn of the century thanks to his involvement in sketch comedy; he was both a writer and performer for Smoke and contributed material to The Sketch Show and the adult-oriented animated series Monkey Dust. In 2004, he won critical praise as the creator and writer of the sitcom The Smoking Room, for which was also credited as an associate producer.

Dooley was a longtime Doctor Who fan who had once won a caption competition for Doctor Who Magazine. In 2007, he wrote the Fourth Doctor short story The Glarn Strategy for the Short Trips: Snapshots anthology from Big Finish Productions. Dooley was then recruited to write for the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. However, the resulting serial -- Mona Lisa's Revenge -- was significantly overhauled by co-producer Phil Ford; as a result, it was agreed that Dooley would not receive a credit on the broadcast episodes. He subsequently provided scripts for Being Human and Way To Go. In 2023, Dooley developed The Family Pile, for which he was both a writer and an associate producer.
