Christopher Bailey

Episodes Broadcast: 1982-1983

Biography

Having graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English, Christopher Martin Bailey wrote installments of Second City Firsts and ITV Playhouse before his agent put his name forward for Doctor Who in early 1980. Bailey's interest in Buddhism led to the development of Kinda for Peter Davison's first season as the Fifth Doctor in 1982. He was almost immediately commissioned for a sequel, and Snakedance was broadcast the following year. Bizarrely, Bailey's low profile and metaphysical subject matter led to persistent rumours that he was really songstress Kate Bush, writing under a pseudonym!

Bailey subsequently wrote a third Doctor Who adventure, called “Manpower”. During its development, however, he became extremely discouraged by the lack of support he felt he was receiving from the production office. In addition to the abandonment of “Manpower”, the result was Bailey's decision to cease his television work altogether. He later helped found the community arts program Same Sky, and lectured in English at the University of Brighton. “Manpower” was eventually adapted for audio by Marc Platt. It was released in 2011 as The Children Of Seth, part of the Doctor Who: The Lost Stories range from Big Finish Productions.
