Raised in New Jersey, Doris Egan attended Barnard College in New York.
She then embarked on a career in computer support on Wall Street, but
she also wrote fiction in her spare time. In 1986, Egan's short story
“Timerider” was published in Amazing Stories
magazine. Before long, her resume expanded to include novels -- most
notably the Gate Of Ivory trilogy, published by DAW Books between
1989 and 1992; some of her books and stories were released under the
pseudonym “Jane Emerson”. Her prose success prompted Egan to
relocate to Los Angeles, where she sought work in television. Starting
out as a story editor on Early Edition in 1996, she soon joined
its writing staff, and also contributed to Profiler.
Egan then became an executive story editor and writer for Dark
Angel; the show also provided her with a co-producer credit on some
episodes, and she would thereafter earn a variety of production credits
on many of the programmes for which she wrote. Her other projects after
the turn of the century included the Superman prequel Smallville,
Tru Calling and House MD. In 2011, Egan wrote Rendition for the Doctor
Who spin-off series Torchwood, which the BBC had begun
co-producing alongside the Starz network in the United States. She moved
on to shows like Reign, Black Sails, Swamp Thing
and The Good Doctor.
