Farren Blackburn
Episodes Broadcast: 2011, 2013
Farren Blackburn first gained notice as the writer/director of several
short films released around the turn of the century. This success led
him to direct episodes of the factual series Panorama, followed
by melodramas like Doctors and Footballers Wive$: Extra
Time in 2005. By this time, he had married actress Verona Joseph,
who later played Penny Carter in Doctor Who's 2008 season
premiere, Partners In Crime.
They would have a son, Terrell, and daughters Elsie-Mae and
Ruby-Rose. Blackburn's other work during the decade included Waterloo
Road and Holby City.
Blackburn began the 2010s by earning credits on Silent Witness,
Vera, and the relaunch of Survivors. He was offered an
assignment on Doctor Who's 2011 season, but he was already
committed to the first three episodes of The Fades. Instead,
Blackburn agreed to direct The
Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, the 2011 Christmas special,
which starred Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. It was followed by the
2013 adventure The Rings Of
Akhaten.
Blackburn moved on to shows like Luther and The
Musketeers. He also started to find work on American programmes,
including the super-hero drama Daredevil. In 2018, Blackburn was
both a director and an executive producer on The Innocents.
Meanwhile, his first films were the 2013 action picture Hammer Of The
Gods and the 2015 Naomi Watts horror movie Shut In. During
the Twenties, Blackburn was an executive producer on the second season
of A Discovery Of Witches, for which he directed five
episodes.
