Biography

Gerry Mill joined the BBC in the late Fifties, initially as an assistant floor manager on shows like Hancock's Half Hour. His first experience of Doctor Who came as a production assistant on The Massacre Of St Bartholomew's Eve in 1966. Mill was promoted to director shortly thereafter, and initially handled episodes of The Newcomers. He then returned to Doctor Who to direct The Faceless Ones in 1967. Other television in the late Sixties included Coronation Street and Z Cars. Amongst Mill's many credits during the Seventies were episodes of Adam Smith, Couples, Rooms and Crown Court. The Eighties saw him working on everything from The Gentle Touch to Super Gran to Robin Of Sherwood to the first of more than thirty episodes of London's Burning. In 1995, Mill began directing for Heartbeat; he became its producer the following year and remained in the role until 2004, continuing to direct episodes until his retirement from television in 2009.
