Henric Hirsch
Episodes Broadcast: 1964
Henric Hirsch was a theatre director in his native Hungary. After
seeking refuge in England during the failed 1956 Hungarian revolution
against Communist rule, he continued to direct for the theatre but also
sought to move into television. He completed the BBC's directors'
training course, with his first assignment being an episode of First
Night in 1964. It was seen by Doctor Who producer Verity
Lambert, who offered him the opportunity to direct The Reign Of Terror. He also
completed an installment of Festival around the same time.
Hirsch struggled on Doctor Who, made ill by the unrelenting pace
of production together with his inability to forge a rapport with
William Hartnell, who played the First Doctor. He soon elected to go
freelance and worked mainly in the theatre, with a focus on English
adaptations of Hungarian-language plays. He also directed episodes
of programmes such as Virgin Of The Secret Service,
Crossroads and Emmerdale Farm. A lone televised acting
role came in a 1966 installment of The Spies. Hirsch does not
appear to have worked in television beyond the mid-Seventies.
