John Davies was born in Birmingham, West Midlands. Educated in
Stratford-upon-Avon, he became interested in Shakespeare and the theatre
in general. As a teenager, Davies started acting for BBC Radio in
Birmingham. After graduation, he was a performer and assistant stage
manager in repertory theatre. In the mid-Fifties, Davies joined BBC
Radio as a studio manager; he moved into television in 1958, initially
directing on news and documentary programmes. His first drama was the
play Incident, broadcast in 1965. Davies then directed episodes
of United! and The Newcomers before being assigned to
1967's The Macra Terror for
Doctor Who.
Later Sixties work included two dozen episodes of Z Cars and the
classics serial Nana. The latter established his focus for much
of the Seventies, which notably included a twenty-part adaptation of
War & Peace starring Anthony Hopkins. Other work encompassed
everything from The Brothers to Backs To The Land to
Tales Of The Unexpected. In 1977, he became the producer-director
of Just William. During the Eighties, he was the executive
producer of Saturday Night Thriller and Mitch, while
directing shows like Cover Her Face and A Taste For Death.
In 1988, he developed The Ruth Rendell Mysteries for television.
The Nineties saw Davies produce The Chief, but he mainly worked
as a director, including programmes such as Devices And Desires
and CI5: The New Professionals. His career continued into the
twenty-first century, with his last work being several episodes of
The Bill between 2000 and 2002.
