Joseph Lidster
Born: 13th July 1977
Episodes Broadcast: 2008-2010
Having been interested in writing and acting from an early age, Joseph
Lidster completed a degree in media studies at Cumbria College of Art
and Design in Carlisle, Cumbria. However, he then struggled to secure
work as a writer, and he instead found himself mired in a succession of
odd jobs. After listening to 1999's The Sirens Of Time -- the
very first Doctor Who audio drama from Big Finish Productions --
Lidster decided to submit a story idea for the range, and he was amazed
to receive a positive response. He ultimately developed The
Rapture, a polarising Seventh Doctor adventure set amidst the party
and drugs culture of Ibiza, which was released in 2002. The same year,
Lidster began contributing to Big Finish's Short Trips line of
Doctor Who short story anthologies, starting with Zodiac.
He would continue to write for the company's various Doctor Who
strands, and his involvement included occasional acting roles, initially
in the 2004 Gallifrey release Square One.
In 2005, Lidster became a principal contributor to the BBC's Doctor
Who website. This experience led to an invitation to write for the
second season of the spin-off series Torchwood, and the result
was 2008's A Day In The
Death. He was quickly recruited to Doctor Who's other
spin-off series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and he wrote serials
for each season between 2008 and 2010, starting with The Mark Of The Berserker.
Lidster was also responsible for various Torchwood spin-off
media, including the 2008 BBC Radio Four play Lost Souls and a
story in the 2009 anthology Consequences from BBC Books.
With the premature end of The Sarah Jane Adventures following the
death of series star Elisabeth Sladen, Lidster moved on to write for its
replacement, Wizards Vs Aliens, as well as children's shows like
Millie Inbetween, Hetty Feather and The Demon
Headmaster. He also developed a number of stage plays, and he became
involved with various short films as both a writer and an actor. During
the Twenties, Lidster scripted an installment of the animated series
The Dumping Ground.
