Joss Agnew
Episodes Broadcast: 2008-2011
Joss Agnew became interested in filmmaking as a child, when his
grandmother would take home movies using an 8mm camera. During the
Eighties, he developed a short stop-motion animation which was chosen
to be aired on the BBC's Screen Test. This success provided Agnew
with the impetus he needed to pursue a career in movies and television.
In the late Eighties, he worked as a trainee on shows like The Jim
Henson Hour and movies such as King Ralph. Agnew then became
an assistant editor in early Nineties, when he was credited on films
including Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. In 1994, he was a winner
of the Lloyds Bank Channel 4 Film Challenge with
Unforgettable.
After the turn of the century, Agnew was finally given the chance to
direct full-time, starting with episodes of Hollyoaks. He went on
to make more than twenty installments each of The Story Of Tracy
Beaker and Young Dracula, while also working on the likes of
Dream Team and Casualty. In 2008, Agnew began directing
for the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. His
first serial was that year's season premiere, The Last Sontaran. Agnew
would go on to direct the 2009 and 2010 season premieres as well, plus
the 2009 Comic Relief special From Raxacoricofallapatorius With
Love... and David Tennant's appearance as the Tenth Doctor in
the same year's The Wedding Of
Sarah Jane Smith. He also made the 2010 and 2011 finales;
although the latter, The Man Who
Never Was, was not planned to conclude The Sarah Jane
Adventures, it became the series' last story following the death of
series star Elisabeth Sladen.
Agnew went on to direct for Wizards Vs Aliens, the programme
which replaced The Sarah Jane Adventures in the CBBC schedule. He
subsequently moved away from children's television, working on shows
including Law & Order: UK, Mr Selfridge, Poldark
and Deep State. Amongst Agnew's credits during the Twenties were
The Split, The Irregulars and The Man Who Fell To
Earth.
