Biography

Joy Wilkinson was born in Burnley, Lancashire. She became involved with amateur dramatics from a young age and, by her teenaged years, she was not only acting in plays but also writing them. Wilkinson spent a decade working as a journalist, before she gained a place in the inaugural 2005 cohort of the BBC Writers' Academy. She soon began contributing to programmes such as Casualty, Holby City and Doctors, scripting no fewer than thirty-six episodes of the latter. In the 2010s, Wilkinson wrote for Land Girls and The Life And Adventures Of Nick Nickleby. She was then recruited for Doctor Who, and developed The Witchfinders for Jodie Whittaker's first season as the Thirteenth Doctor in 2018. Wilkinson also wrote a Thirteenth Doctor short story called Gatecrashers for the 2019 anthology Doctor Who: The Target Storybook from BBC Books, followed by a novelisation of The Witchfinders in 2021. She ventured into short film in 2020, as both the writer and director of Ma'am. Amongst her other scripts during the Twenties were installments of The Watch and Lockwood & Co.
