Marcus Wilson
Born: 4th July 1973 (as Marcus Scott Wilson)
Marcus Wilson was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire and grew up a fan of Doctor Who, notably during Tom Baker's era as the Fourth Doctor. He studied at the College of Ripon and York St John, and then took a job on the soap opera Emmerdale. Initially part of the camera crew as an assistant grip, Wilson subsequently became a third assistant director, a locations manager, and then a first assistant director. It was in the latter role that he found opportunities beyond Emmerdale after the turn of the century, with credits including At Home With The Braithwaites and Heartbeat. Wilson was also offered a place on Doctor Who for its 2005 season, but he was otherwise committed. Meanwhile, in 2003, Wilson married sound recordist Helen McIlveen, with whom he formed Castlegarth Productions in 2006. By this time, Wilson had been an associate producer on Cutting It and No Angels, and then a line producer on Life On Mars. His first credit as a full producer came on True Dare Kiss in 2007, after which he moved on to Whitechapel and Paradox. Wilson was overseeing the final episodes of the mystery series Taggart when he was invited to interview for the vacant producer's job on Doctor Who, working under showrunner Steven Moffat. This time, he was able to accept the offer, and he took up the post with The Impossible Astronaut / Day Of The Moon, partway into the making of the 2011 season.
Although Wilson normally preferred to remain on a programme for no more than one year, he made an exception for Doctor Who. This meant that he not only oversaw the show's transition to its new Roath Lock production facility, but also the mammoth undertaking that was 2013's The Day Of The Doctor, a special episode to mark Doctor Who's fiftieth anniversary. To the extent that his producing responsibilities allowed, Wilson occasionally made uncredited directorial contributions to the programme, taking charge of second unit material. He also directed The Great Detective himself; this mini-episode aired during the 2012 edition of the Children In Need charity drive. In 2011, Wilson's image appeared on the hotel wall in The God Complex. The same year, he had an opportunity to work with his wife when she was the sound recordist on Closing Time. Wilson's last Doctor Who credit came on the 2013 Christmas special, The Time Of The Doctor, which was also Matt Smith's final episode as the Eleventh Doctor. Wilson moved on to produce Our Zoo, Luther and The A Word. He became an executive producer on the 2017 revival of The Worst Witch, and subsequently rejoined The A Word and then Luther in the same capacity. |
