Michael Kerrigan's early work as a director came on the children's
series Jackanory in the late Seventies; he also wrote a number of
adaptations for the programme. During the Eighties, his directing
credits included Maggie, No 73 and Henry's Leg. On
Knights Of God he worked with Andrew Morgan, who directed two
Doctor Who serials towards the end of the decade; it was Morgan
who recommended Kerrigan to producer John Nathan-Turner. As a result,
Kerrigan was assigned to the sword-and-sorcery-infused Battlefield, a 1989 adventure for
Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor.
Kerrigan continued his association with family-oriented entertainment
during the Nineties, such as Mother Goose Stories (for which
he won a Daytime Emmy Award), Motormouth and The Famous
Five. More adult fare included Coronation Street,
Emmerdale and Springhill. Following the turn of the
century, Kerrigan continued to emphasise his work for younger viewers,
with credits on programmes like The Basil Brush Show and
Captain Mack. In 2008, he re-established his relationship with
Doctor Who when he directed two serials for the
spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures. These episodes were
amongst the last work of his career; Kerrigan passed away on August 7th,
2014.
