Michael Leeston-Smith was born in Torquay, Devon. As a teenager, he
was hired at Ealing Studios, first as a photographer and then as a
sound recordist. He joined the BBC in 1938, but his employment was
interrupted by the Second World War, during which Leeston-Smith served
in the Royal Horse Artillery. Returning to the BBC, he was a lighting
engineer on the original The Quartermass Experiment in 1953, and
was promoted to production assistant for its 1955 sequel, Quatermass
II. Leeston-Smith then became a staff director, with credits
including The Small House At Allington (which he also produced),
Witch Wood, Z Cars and R3. In 1965 he made The Myth Makers, which would be his
only Doctor Who serial. Leeston-Smith left the BBC to go
freelance, eventually moving to South Africa in 1973 to work for the
nascent television service of the South African Broadcasting
Corporation. He died on December 6th, 2001.
