Biography

Michelle Gomez was born in Glasgow, Scotland; she and her brother, Derek, were twins. She became captivated with acting after watching a production of the musical Kiss Me, Kate at the age of seven years, prompting her to join the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama as a youth member. As an adult, however, Gomez struggled to gain formal admission to drama school, and she instead trained to be a drama teacher. Nonetheless, she continued to seek acting opportunities, which led to her television debut in the 1989 telefilm First And Last. Gomez's profile gradually increased during the Nineties, when she found roles in shows like Taggart, The Bill and Highlander: The Raven. Her first movie was the 1998 Irvine Welsh adaptation The Acid House. Gomez married actor Jack Davenport in 2000; at the time, he was starring in Steven Moffat's sitcom Coupling.

In 2002, Gomez earned her first lead role on The Book Group. Over the next few years, she also starred in Green Wing, Carrie & Barry and Feel The Force. Gomez's initial brush with Doctor Who came in the 2007 Seventh Doctor audio drama Valhalla from Big Finish Productions. In 2008, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company for a season; in light of the musical which had inspired her interest in acting, it was fitting that she would play Kate in The Taming Of The Shrew. Gomez and Davenport had a son, Harry, in 2010, and she was soon prominent in both Bad Education and Psychobitches. Indeed, Gomez's schedule had become so busy that she was forced to turn down Moffat's offer of a television role in Doctor Who, which he was now showrunning.

Gomez debuted as “Missy” in 2014's Deep Breath, Peter Capaldi's first adventure as the Twelfth Doctor

Not long afterwards, however, Moffat approached Gomez again with a more substantial offer. He was planning to reintroduce the Doctor's Time Lord arch-nemesis, the Master, but in a female incarnation: an unprecedented development for the programme to that point. Gomez took the part, and she debuted as “Missy” -- short for “Mistress” -- in 2014's Deep Breath, which was also Peter Capaldi's first adventure as the Twelfth Doctor. She made a number of cameo appearances throughout the year before her character's true identity was finally revealed in the finale, Dark Water / Death In Heaven. Missy was back the following season, teaming up with Davros and the Daleks for The Magician's Apprentice / The Witch's Familiar. Then, during 2017, Gomez took Missy on a redemptive arc which saw the renegade trying to reform. Since the actress had decided to leave Doctor Who alongside Capaldi, this storyline culminated with Missy's demise in The Doctor Falls.

Gomez's other roles during the 2010s included The Brink and The Collection, while her trailblazing performance in Doctor Who soon drew the attention of American television. After two episodes of the Batman prequel Gotham, she won a regular role as a villain on The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, based on the Archie Comics character. Meanwhile, Gomez returned to Missy in audio plays for Big Finish -- initially in The Bekdel Test, an installment of The Diary Of River Song, and then in several seasons of her own Missy range. As the Twenties dawned, she co-starred in the first season of The Flight Attendant, before joining the off-beat DC Comics super-hero show Doom Patrol.
