Born: 15th June 1969 (as Michelle Denise Greenidge)
Episodes Broadcast: 2023-2024
Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Michelle Greenidge aspired to be a
performer while growing up in Peckham, London. However, her parents were
concerned about the job insecurity she would face as a professional
actress -- especially given the relative scarcity of opportunities for
women of colour in the early Eighties. Instead, they encouraged
Greenidge to take a position with Southwark Council, and she spent the
next two decades helping to find accommodations for the borough's
homeless residents. Nonetheless, she still harboured an interest in
acting, and she began training during her thirties. Greenidge started
appearing in short films in 2009, and her television debut came in a
2014 episode of All About The McKenzies.
A more substantial opportunity arrived in 2015, when Greenidge could be
seen in four installments of Venus Vs Mars. The following year,
her first feature film was the crime thriller The Intent, and she
later appeared in its 2018 sequel. Having taken guest parts in the likes
of Intruders and Doctors, Greenidge won a regular role in
Ricky Gervais' After Life in 2019, followed by Code 404
and Mandy the year after. In 2021, she could be seen in the
super-hero movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage, as well as Russell
T Davies' critically-acclaimed television drama It's A Sin.
Greenidge and Davies were soon reunited when she was cast in Doctor
Who as Carla Sunday, the adoptive mother of Millie Gibson's Ruby,
companion to Fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. She and Gibson joined the
series together with the 2023 Christmas special, The Church On Ruby Road.
