Paul Tomalin's early days as a television scriptwriter were spent in a partnership with Daniel McCulloch. Their first credit came in 2006 with They Keep Killing Suzie, an episode of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood. Tomalin then joined Paul Abbott's dark comedy Shameless as the story editor for its sixth season in 2009; he and Abbott would also co-write one installment. Tomalin subsequently collaborated with Abbott again on seven episodes of his police drama No Offence, while also he contributed to The Frankenstein Chronicles.
