Biography

Peter J Hammond had been a postal worker and a lorry driver when he sold his first script to Canadian radio. This led to work on British television, starting in the mid-Sixties with programmes like Thirty-Minute Theatre, and he was soon both a writer and script editor on Ramshackle Road and Z Cars. Hammond would spend the next decade closely associated with police dramas like Z Cars -- for which he provided more than thirty scripts -- but his resume during the Seventies also included shows as diverse as The Hole In The Wall, Ace Of Wands, Within These Walls and Angels. In 1979, he cemented his television legacy by creating the paranormal series Sapphire & Steel. Hammond would write each of the show's thirty-four episodes, in which Joanna Lumley and David McCallum starred as a pair of otherworldly investigators into the supernatural. He also novelised its first serial for Virgin Books.

Following the end of Sapphire & Steel in 1982, Hammond created the sitcom Lame Ducks, and wrote for shows including The Gentle Touch and Emmerdale Farm, as well as the first of almost forty episodes of The Bill. In 1986, he developed a Sixth Doctor adventure entitled “Paradise Five”, which was envisaged as part of the season-spanning The Trial Of A Time Lord. The script ultimately went unused, although it was later adapted as a 2010 audio play by Big Finish Productions. Hammond's Nineties credits included EastEnders, Doctor Finlay, Dangerfield and Ruth Rendell Mysteries.

Hammond continued to write occasional scripts after the turn of the century, most notably contributing nine episodes to the long-running mystery drama Midsomer Murders. He also returned to the worlds of Doctor Who with two stories for the spin-off series Torchwood. Both were reminiscent of Sapphire & Steel, pitting Captain Jack Harkness and his colleagues against murderous fairies in 2006's Small Worlds and a sinister troupe of circus performers in 2008's From Out Of The Rain. In 2018, Scarsmoor Publishing released Hammond's original novel, Downtimers.
