Born in the Midlands, Phil Ford's talent for writing was evident from an early age. As an adult, he worked in journalism and then advertising while nursing an ambition to be a scriptwriter. Finally, in 1997, Ford was commissioned for an episode of Taggart; it was followed by a script for Heartbeat, more than a dozen installments of Bad Girls, and almost seventy episodes of Coronation Street. After the turn of the century, Ford worked on The Bill and Footballers' Wives before he became the lead writer on the 2005 revival of Captain Scarlet. His contributions to the animated series caught the eye of Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies. When he began setting up the younger-skewing spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, Davies asked Ford to become involved. Ford wound up writing eleven serials for The Sarah Jane Adventures, and took a co-producing role starting with its second season in 2008. His last script for the show, 2011's The Curse Of Clyde Langer, was recognised with a Writers' Guild Award. Ford also novelised two of his stories, Eye Of The Gorgon and Day Of The Clown, for Penguin Books. For Doctor Who's other spin-off series, Torchwood, he wrote the pivotal 2008 adventure Something Borrowed, in which main character Gwen Cooper married her long-suffering boyfriend, Rhys Williams. Ford also wrote a Torchwood novel entitled SkyPoint, published by BBC Books in 2008, and a 2009 audio drama called The Dead Line; both were based on unmade television scripts. Before he stepped down from Doctor Who, Davies was determined to find an opportunity for Ford to write for the parent show. As a result, the two men collaborated on the eerie 2009 special The Waters Of Mars, David Tennant's penultimate adventure as the Tenth Doctor. The same year, Ford provided the script for an animated Tenth Doctor story called Dreamland. He then developed the narratives for a series of online Doctor Who games. In the meantime, Ford had also written episodes of Bombshell and Waterloo Road. The Sarah Jane Adventures ended prematurely in 2011 following the death of its star, Elisabeth Sladen. To replace it, Davies and Ford conceived Wizards Vs Aliens. It ran for three seasons, and Ford became its executive producer and showrunner during its final run in 2014. Meanwhile, Steven Moffat had taken over Doctor Who from Davies, and he invited Ford to become involved with Peter Capaldi's first season as the Twelfth Doctor. As a result, Ford and Moffat collaborated on 2014's Into The Dalek. Ford's next involvement with Doctor Who came in 2023, when he contributed to the Tales Of The TARDIS series on BBC iPlayer. |
