Biography

Rupert Laight broke into the television industry in the late Nineties, and variously worked as a storyliner, story associate or scriptwriter on the soap operas Crossroads, Emmerdale and Coronation Street, plus the drama Is Harry On The Boat?. His first professional association with Doctor Who came in 2002, when he acted in the Sixth Doctor audio play Excelis Rising from Big Finish Productions. Laight was then asked to write a script for Sarah Jane Smith, a new audio range which Big Finish was developing as a vehicle for the popular Seventies companion played by Elisabeth Sladen. The result was Ghost Town, released in late 2002.

When Sladen made her return to television in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, Laight was commissioned to novelise two stories from the programme's first season for Penguin Characters Books. His adaptation of Revenge Of The Slitheen was published in 2007, followed by Whatever Happened To Sarah Jane? a year later. Laight was then recruited to write for the show itself. He initially contributed the 2009 finale, The Gift, before returning the following year with Lost In Time. This would prove to be Laight's final television credit, although scripted the 2011 audio drama The Devil And Miss Carew, which was based upon Doctor Who's adult-oriented spin-off, Torchwood, and broadcast on BBC Radio Four. Laight passed away on March 23rd, 2018.
