Biography

Sarah Sutton was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire. She studied ballet from an early age, which led to her involvement with a Christmas pantomime of Winnie The Pooh at nine years old. Two years later, Sutton made her television debut in a 1973 installment of the anthology Menace, and then won the title role in a new adaptation of Alice Through The Looking Glass broadcast that Christmas. She then starred in the supernatural serial The Moon Stallion, had a recurring part in Westway, and made appearances in shows like Oil Strike North. Sutton was also performing on stage and radio, but was growing eager to move away from juvenile roles.

In late 1980, having recently recorded an adaptation of The Crucible, Sutton successfully auditioned to play Nyssa in Doctor Who. The character was only intended to appear in The Keeper Of Traken, but producer John Nathan-Turner was so impressed with Sutton's performance that he decided to retain her as an ongoing companion. As such, Sutton bridged the transition from Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor to Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor. In 1982, she had the opportunity to play a second Doctor Who role, as Nyssa's lookalike Ann Talbot in the murder-mystery Black Orchid. Davison was particularly fond of Nyssa, whom he felt was the companion who best suited his Doctor. As such, he was disappointed to learn that Sutton and Nathan-Turner had agreed that the character would be written out after two years on Doctor Who. Nyssa left the TARDIS in 1983's Terminus, although she made a cameo appearance the following year in Davison's final story, The Caves Of Androzani.

Sutton wound down her career following the birth of her daughter in 1991

Sutton went on to appear on the stage, and studied for a time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1985, she married Michael Bundy, who was later a family physician. Further television appearances included Casualty and Unnatural Pursuits. With her enthusiasm for acting waning, Sutton decided to wind down her career following the birth of her daughter, Hannah, in 1991.

Sutton did reprise Nyssa for the 1993 charity special Dimensions In Time, which celebrated Doctor Who's thirtieth anniversary. She was also one of the first actors to join Big Finish Productions' range of Doctor Who audio dramas, initially appearing as Nyssa in the 2000 release The Land Of The Dead. Sutton also contributed a cameo appearance to The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, an affectionate spoof created by Davison for the show's fiftieth birthday in 2013. She made a further appearance in the specially-produced trailer for 2023's Season Twenty Blu-ray release.
