Terry Molloy
Born: 4th January 1947 (as Terence Molloy)
Episodes Broadcast: 1984-1985, 1988
Terry Molloy was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, but his
father's work with the Royal Air Force took him to Aden when he was
still a child. While in the Middle East, Molloy's mother worked in
military broadcasting, which gave him his first exposure to radio
performance. He originally hoped to follow his father into the RAF, but
was deemed ineligible due to poor eyesight. Molloy also failed to gain
admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Instead, he attended
Christ's College of Education in Liverpool, Merseyside, and graduated in
1968 with a Bachelor of Education in music and drama. In 1970, Molloy
married Heather Barrett; they had a daughter, Hannah, and sons Robert
and Philip.
For a time, Molloy played saxophone with The Big T-Bunkum Band and
considered focussing on music, but he ultimately decided to pursue a
career in acting. He spent much of the Seventies working in repertory
theatre, but also broke into radio, where he joined the cast of The
Archers. Molloy would play Mike Tucker in the soap opera for more
than four decades. It wasn't until 1980 that he began to find work on
television, starting with God's Wonderful Railway. Molloy could
also be seen in programmes such as Radio Phoenix and
Angels.
In 1984, Molloy became the third actor to play Davros in
Doctor Who
Molloy then became the third actor to play Davros in Doctor Who.
He made his first appearance in the role for 1984's Resurrection Of The Daleks,
opposite Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. He returned the following
year for Revelation Of The
Daleks, by which time Colin Baker had taken over as the Sixth
Doctor. In between, Molloy made an appearance sans mask as
Russell, an ill-fated undercover policeman, in Attack Of The Cybermen. He then
made a surprise comeback as Davros in 1988's Remembrance Of The
Daleks, with the character now masquerading as the Emperor Dalek
and sparring with Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor.
Other work in the late Eighties included Oliver Twist, The
Real Eddy English and Tales Of Sherwood Forest. Amongst
Molloy's Nineties television was Jupiter Moon, Chalkface,
The Bill and Dangerfield. His first movie credit came in
1994's Chasing The Deer with Brian Blessed, having previously
gone unbilled in 1990's Truly Madly Deeply. Molloy joined various
other Doctor Who alumni for the 1995 video drama The Devil Of
Winterbourne from BBV. His credits in the twenty-first century
included Doctors, Byker Grove and Casualty. Molloy
reprised the role of Davros -- in addition to playing a variety of other
characters -- for the range of Doctor Who audio dramas from Big
Finish Productions. His first contribution to the series, appropriately
enough, was simply called Davros; this Sixth Doctor adventure was
released in 2003. The next year, Molloy married his second wife,
Victoria Smillie. In 2005, he took to the stage for The Trial Of
Davros, performed at the Tameside Hippodrome in Ashton-under-Lyne,
Greater Manchester.
