Toby Whithouse was born in Southend, Essex. In his youth he became a fan
of comic books -- and especially the work of Alan Moore -- which
inspired him to study art and design at the Southend College of
Technology, with the goal of becoming an illustrator. However,
Whithouse's involvement with amateur dramatics soon prompted him to
chart a different course, and he gained admission to the Guildhall
School of Music and Drama. He made his television debut in 1992, in a
regular role on The House Of Eliott. Other work during the decade
included shows like The Bill and Goodnight Sweetheart,
while Whithouse's first movie was the 1993 CS Lewis biography
Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins. He married Helen Wickens
in 1997; a son, Lucas, was born in 1999, and a daughter, Madeleine, in
2001.
As the Nineties wore on, Whithouse became frustrated with many of the
scripts he encountered. He decided to try his hand at writing, and
earned critical acclaim for his first play, Jump Mr Malinoff,
Jump. Before the end of the decade, he found himself contributing a
script to Where The Heart Is. Following the turn of the century,
Whithouse continued to act in films such as Bridget Jones's Diary
and shows like Holby City, Kavanagh QC and Doctors.
But writing took on increasing importance in his career, with episodes
of Attachments and Hotel Babylon bookending his
involvement in the development of No Angels. Whithouse was then
invited to write an episode of Doctor Who by his friend,
executive producer Julie Gardner. 2006's School Reunion saw David
Tennant's Tenth Doctor paired with beloved Seventies companion Sarah
Jane Smith, as played by Elisabeth Sladen. The same year, Whithouse
scripted Greeks Bearing
Gifts for spin-off series Torchwood.
In 2009, Whithouse created the popular supernatural drama
Being Human
In 2009, Whithouse created the popular supernatural drama Being
Human, which ran for five seasons and spawned an American remake. He
earned his first credits as executive producer on the show, and also
made several on-camera appearances during its final run. Whithouse
returned to Doctor Who on three occasions during Matt Smith's
tenure as the Eleventh Doctor, starting with The Vampires Of Venice in 2010.
Following the end of Being Human, he created the espionage serial
The Game. He then contributed two stories for Peter Capaldi's
Twelfth Doctor: the haunting Under
The Lake / Before The Flood in 2015, and 2017's The Lie Of The Land. He was then
invited to make a cameo appearance in Twice Upon A Time, which was not
only Capaldi's final episode but also marked the end of Steven Moffat's
era as Doctor Who's showrunner.
In 2019, Whithouse's love of comic books led him to write a story for
the Marvel Comics super-hero Night Raven. In 2020, he was the executive
producer of Noughts + Crosses, for which he wrote the first two
episodes.
