Biography

Tony Virgo was born in Harrow, London. He worked for the BBC as a production assistant in the late Seventies, with credits including Survivors and Blake's 7. Virgo then completed the BBC's internal directors' course, in which capacity he initially handled three 1982 episodes of Angels. Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner then hired him for The King's Demons, a 1983 adventure for Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. Virgo subsequently directed programmes such as Emmerdale Farm, Travellers By Night, All Creatures Great And Small and A Country Practice. With more than a dozen episodes of EastEnders under his belt, he was asked to become its producer. Virgo then moved on to The Bill, where he also earned his final directing credits in 1994.

Now focussed on producing, Virgo's other work during the Nineties included Peak Practice, The Vet, Dangerfield and Dalziel And Pascoe. In 2000, he became the Head of Drama for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, although he remained in the position for only a matter of months. Virgo subsequently entered municipal politics, running as a Conservative. In 2007, he was elected to the Bracknell Forest Borough Council in Wiltshire, and served a year as mayor from 2016 to 2017.
