Tony Virgo

Tony Virgo was born in Harrow, London. He worked for the BBC as a
production assistant in the late Seventies, with credits including
Survivors and Blake's 7. Virgo then completed the BBC's
internal directors' course, in which capacity he initially handled three
1982 episodes of Angels. Doctor Who producer John
Nathan-Turner then hired him for The
King's Demons, a 1983 adventure for Peter Davison as the Fifth
Doctor. Virgo subsequently directed programmes such as Emmerdale
Farm, Travellers By Night, All Creatures Great And
Small and A Country Practice. With more than a dozen episodes
of EastEnders under his belt, he was asked to become its
producer. Virgo then moved on to The Bill, where he also earned
his final directing credits in 1994.
Now focussed on producing, Virgo's other work during the Nineties
included Peak Practice, The Vet, Dangerfield and
Dalziel And Pascoe. In 2000, he became the Head of Drama for the
Australian Broadcasting Commission, although he remained in the position
for only a matter of months. Virgo subsequently entered municipal
politics, running as a Conservative. In 2007, he was elected to the
Bracknell Forest Borough Council in Wiltshire, and served a year as
mayor from 2016 to 2017.
