Tosin Cole was born in New York City, but he moved to London at the age
of eight in the wake of his parents' separation. As a teenager, he
became involved in acting via Intermission Youth Theatre, which was
established to help disadvantaged young people. Cole gained notice for
his 2009 performance in Wasted!, a reimagined version of William
Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. He made his television debut in 2010
when he joined the cast of The Cut for its final season, and he
was cast in Hollyoaks the following year. Other television during
the decade included episodes of Holby City and Lewis. Cole
could also be seen in a number of movies, such as Burning Sands
with Alfre Woodard, Unlocked starring Noomi Rapace and Orlando
Bloom, and as X-Wing pilot Bastian in the blockbuster Star Wars:
Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
In 2018, Cole joined Doctor Who as Ryan Sinclair, companion to
Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor. As established in his first
story, The Woman Who Fell To
Earth, Ryan suffered from dyspraxia, which sometimes presented
him with an additional challenge during his adventures in the TARDIS.
Sinclair remained on Doctor Who for two seasons; he departed in
the 2021 New Year's Day special, Revolution Of The Daleks,
alongside Bradley Walsh, who played Ryan's grandfather, Graham O'Brien.
Cole continued to establish himself in movies, taking roles in The
Souvenir and its sequel, the critically-acclaimed Till, and
the Nineties remake House Party. On television, he appeared in
the first season of the American legal drama 61st Street.
