Born: 1981 (as Wayne Che Yip)
Episodes Broadcast: 2016-2017, 2019
Oxford-born Wayne Yip grew up a fan of movies, developing an interest in
the work of filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Peter Jackson. After
graduating from Banbury College in 2004 with a degree in graphic design,
he began working as a runner for a London production company. They
allowed Yip to borrow some equipment, and he began making music videos
for his roommate's band. He was soon collaborating on short films with
Alex Garcia Lopez, starting with Happy Birthday Granddad in 2007.
The success of these projects led to an opportunity to work on a 2010
episode of Coming Up. Yip and Garcia Lopez were soon directing
for Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, which starred former Doctor
Who companion Billie Piper, followed by episodes of Misfits
and Utopia.
By the middle of the decade, Yip was tackling solo assignments on shows
like Tatau, for which he also earned a co-producer credit. He
then began directing on both sides of the Atlantic, with his first North
American project being an episode of Salem. In 2016, Yip made two
episodes of the Doctor Who spin-off Class. He then joined
the parent show for a pair of 2017 adventures featuring Peter Capaldi as
the Twelfth Doctor, before returning to direct Jodie Whitaker as the
Thirteenth Doctor in the 2019 New Year's special, Resolution. Other work during
the latter part of the 2010s included Happy! and Preacher.
During the Twenties, Yip contributed to two big-budget fantasy
programmes: The Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of The Rings: The
Rings Of Power, serving as a co-executive producer on the
latter.
